Unusual suitcase designs

Everybody who travels uses luggage. Suitcases are often the weapon of choice to transport a person’s belongings. Whilst a suitcase is nothing more than a large case in different sizes which you have to carry or roll from point A to B, there could be situations where you wished your suitcase could do something more. That’s exactly what some designers or manufacturers thought, and they came up with all kinds of different uses and designs for suitcases.

Suitcases to sit on

I’ll start with designs for one of the most annoying things that can happen while traveling. Yes…waiting… If you have bad luck your feet are killing you and there is no chair around. In that case, these suitcases to sit on can help you out.

Swany Walkin’Bag
This first bag has a steel frame on which you attach the specially designed bag. The Steel frame incorporates a foldout chair which can hold a person up to 125kg. The bag can be detached from the frame in the event that it is not needed. Here you can find many more designs.

SeatKase
You can also sit on the suitcases from SeatKase. The ingenious thing they did was to spring load the wheels so that the case doesnt roll from underneath you while sitting on it. Clever! Next to that they added a small flap on top of the suitcase creating a small table to work on with your laptop for example. Find more here.

Zuca Cases
You can also sit on Zuca suitcases, and they also hold pouches inside which you can easily remove to keep things tidy. Next to that they just look cool! See all their designs here.

There are also some concept suitcases that not have been put into production yet. See some cool ones below.

“The Trip” suitcase.
This engineering miracle is part suitcase, part chair, part speaker! Just connect your phone or MP3 player and enjoy the music. Even when your mp3 player runs out of juice The Trip will charge it. I really like the design of this suitcase; it looks a little like R2D2 from Star Wars.

The below concept actually looks really comfortable! Although the shape of the case itself looks not really easy to handle.

With the next design it looks like you will drop all your belongings on the floor to use the chair:

TITAN High Roller Suitcase
The next suitcase is one of my favorites. It actually turns into a skateboard! Sadly also still a concept, but this one can really help people get to the gate in time. It also holds a detachable laptop case.

Of course, next to a human powered suitcase someone also has to come up with an electric powered suitcase. See below the NEXUS. It can support up to 110kg and can reach a speed of up to 15kmph. Very cool!

Samsonite OBAG
The Samsonite OBAG is a still a concept. According to the designer the big wheels have a much higher stability than the present small wheels. The luggage can still be easily reached via a large zip in the middle or through a door on the side of the suitcase.

This suitcase below is actually real and can be bought. It is an electric powered suitcase to help you while strolling. The suitcase has a so-called “anti-gravity” design. This means that the weight of the suitcase is always above the wheels and will not stress your hand and arm. On top of that, when the suitcase is tilted forwards the wheels will be electrically powered, resulting in very easy rolling – even uphill!

Another helpful suitcase concept is the “climbing up case”. This suitcase will help you drag your suitcase upstairs without any friction.

The next concept was actually the winner of a design contest by Samsonite. It is called the Strolley and it will turn into a stroller when flipping up the handle. The downside is that, as soon as your youngster can walk, the suitcase loses its added value.

Suitcases to keep your stuff nice

This guy hated it that every time he unpacked his suit it was full of creases. He invented the SkyRoll, the world’s first roll up bag. Not really a suitcase, but business travelers will love it. Find more information here.

Another way to keep your suits neat and tidy is to use the (former?) Tumi Townhouse Trunk. This large suitcase can hold multiple coat hangers for suits and has real drawers to keep the rest of your stuff tidy. You can actually use it as a real closet. I cannot find it anymore in the Tumi website but maybe they still have one if you contact them.

Suitcase Fun

I want to end with some suitcase fun. The following designer made some cool stickers to add onto your suitcase. Make sure that you understand that some of these stickers can upset airport staff and all consequences are your own responsibility.

As with the stickers above, the following suitcases will probably give you more problems than laughs when walking in the airport, but I still find them funny to look at.
