This time on our City A-Z list we have the beautiful and scintillating Italian capital of Rome. There is so much to write about Rome that we found ourselves struggling to decide what to include; each letter on this list represents just a small factor of what Rome is all about. If not the most, this amazing city is certainly one of the most popular destinations in Europe; trust us when we say that it’s not all thanks to the beautiful Italian women and the delicious food. Rome has a certain atmosphere that is simply supreme and that’s what makes it so unique. Read our A-Z list and start getting to know Rome from the inside out.


A – Ancient Rome – Rome is a city filled with history, old rituals, interesting stories and a lot of mystery. The Romans had a lot of influence and power in the old days and when visiting Rome you will surly learn many things about the Romans that will intrigue you and inspire you to learn more.

B – Buses – if you are the kind of person who likes to discover a new destination from the inside-out, you will love Rome’s bus system; the main bus lines travel to almost every spot in the city and for just a small fee you will be able to see all the major attractions in town.

C – Colosseum – there is simply no way to visit Rome without going to see the impressive Colosseum. Located in the centre of Rome, this breathtaking amphitheatre is the largest construction that was ever built during the Roman Empire. Viewing this immense structure you will be able to observe one of the finest works of Roman architecture.


D – Districts – Rome is the largest city in Italy and it is divided into nine different districts: the modern centre, old Rome, Vatican, Colosseo, north center, Trastevere, Aventino-Testaccio, Esquilino-San Giovanni and Nomentano. Each one of these districts has its own character and uniqueness. In case the length of your visit doesn’t allow you to go to all of them, we would recommend you to plan your schedule wisely and choose in advance which attractions you want to see most.

E – Eternal City – in case you didn’t know, Rome is also called the ‘Eternal City’. This flattering nickname was given to the city as a symbol for its immense power and influence for more than two millennia.

F – Film FestivalRome international film festival, (also called ‘Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma’) is one of the biggest events of the year. Even though the festival is still relatively young, famous artists from all over the globe travel there in order to walk the red carpet and be photographed by hundreds of paparazzi. Receiving extensive coverage, the film festival is a huge occasion filled with fashion, style and beautiful people.

G – Gardens – Rome is a city with so many different things to see and do that it can get a bit overwhelming at times. Whenever you feel you just want to take a break from running from one attraction to another, take a break and visit the stunning Villa Borghese gardens. This unbelievably beautiful public park is a place where you will be able to relax, enjoy nature, lay down on the grass or rent a boat for a day.

H – Handbags – every single fashionista out there would never say no to a trendy, beautiful and super chic Italian bag. Dolce& Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Gucci and Fendi are just some of the famous Italian designers that brought to our lives amazing fashion, high quality garments, stylish shoes and some stunning handbags! They might be awfully expensive but they are worth every cent!

I – Ice Cream – there is nothing better than a fruity Italian ice cream on a sunny day. Strolling down the gorgeous streets of Rome you will come across many ice cream parlours. If you want our advice, make sure to stop in at least two ice cream shops every day! After all, you are on vacation, so who cares if you’ll get a little chubby by the end of your trip?

J – Jewish Quarter – in the old days the Jewish quarter used to be a poor area where few people chose to spend their time. These days the quarter is a spot in town which is filled with stylish people, posh restaurants and expensive shops. Dedicate half a day to walking the quarter’s tiny streets and you will surely enjoy the special atmosphere there.

K – Kids – Rome is the perfect place to take children. As much as the city gives an impression of a place mainly aimed at couples and culture-lovers, there are many different things for children to see and do; the amazing ‘Explora Museum’, the famous Monster Park, the fun amusement park LunEUR and many more other activities. If you want to save some money, visit one of Rome’s public parks and enjoy a sunny day outdoor.

L – Landmarks – Rome is filled with important and extremely beautiful landmarks: Castel Sant’Angelo, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Ponte Vittorio Emanuele and Palazzo di Giustizia are just some of the wonders you will be able to see whilst visiting. Try to get some information on each landmark before you visit it, as this will help you to appreciate the importance and history of these amazing structures.

M – Museums – there are so many different and interesting museums in Rome that you will have to plan your time wisely in order to make it to even half of them. Art museums, science museums, Vatican museums, archaeology museums and more, are all part of Rome’s wide cultural variety. For those of you who didn’t know, the Vatican museum complex is the largest in the world. Expect a tough decision when it comes to choosing the top 5 museums you want to visit.

N – Nightlife – in case you were starting to wonder whether Rome is a city for only people who appreciate art and history, don’t worry; Rome is also the perfect place for visitors who like to have some fun and enjoy the party scene. Aside from trendy restaurants and stylish bars, Rome also offers plenty of vibrant nightclubs where you will be able to listen to famous DJs and dance the night away. As the dress code here is elegant and fashionable, make sure that you dress to impress.

O – Opera – the ‘Teatro dell’Opera di Roma‘ (Rome Opera House) is the major opera house in Rome. Italian people have a great passion for opera and we can understand why: the romance, the tragedy and the drama can all make even the strongest person cry. P – Pizza & Pasta – We don’t know about you, but whenever we think about Rome, or Italy in general, the first thing that comes to mind is pizza and pasta. Italian people are well known for their excellent cooking and passion for food. Don’t be surprised if by the time you get home your waistband will feel tighter than usual; it is impossible to visit Italy without eating all day long!

Q – Quotes – have you ever heard about the famous quote, “when in Rome, do as the Romans?” Have you ever wondered what this saying actually means? Attributed to Saint Ambrose, a former Bishop of Milan, this phrase was originally used as a diplomatic antidote to liturgical squabbles typical to denominationism. Having since been adopted into popular circulation, it now more generally refers to adopting the cultural nuances of your host city.

R – Restaurants – as you probably already understood from this post, Rome – and Italy in general – is THE place when it comes to eating excellent food. Tourists from all over the world just can’t get enough of Italian cuisine and thanks to that there are hundreds of outstanding restaurants all over town. If you want to make sure you are eating in the right place just look around to see if there are some local people around you; the more authentic the spot, the better for you.

S – Sophia Loren – Sophia Loren is more than just a talented actress; she is a symbol of femininity, sexiness, sophistication and elegance. The stunning star was born at the Clinica Regina Margherita in Rome on 20th September 1934 and to this day she is considered as one of the greatest actresses of her time.

T – Termini Railway Station – With a huge surface area of 225,000 square metres, an amazing renovation that cost more than 119 million Euros, and over 480,000 passengers every day, Roma Termini Station is the main hub for travellers in Rome. The station’s design was well considered in order to provide visitors with total convenience and relaxation while they are on the move.

U – Universities – ever dreamed of living in Rome, or wondered how it would be to spend your summer in this very special city? Always wanted to learn Italian? Rome is known for its international feel and open-minded atmosphere; that is why many expats live there and thoroughly enjoy the city. Rome’s universities offer different English-medium courses for people who wish to receive some education whilst discovering a new place to live.

V – Vatican City – the legendary Vatican City (Citta del Vaticano) was built over the tomb of Saint Peter, and with only 800 citizens currently living there, it is the smallest state in the world. Vatican City is a place filled with history, artwork and incredibly important monuments. Even if you are not a spiritual person, you will surely find Vatican City a fascinating and inspiring location.

W – Weather – the weather in Italy is warm for almost the entire year. When visiting Rome you need to take into account that the summer time is extremely hot; for some people even too hot. What makes the situation even worse is the fact that in many restaurants and bars there is no air conditioning. If you have the chance to travel from mid September to October, you will be able to enjoy not only a cooler climate but also fewer tourists and lower prices.

X – Xmas – a visit to Rome during the ‘Xmas’ period will prove to be an unrivalled experience. Aside from the standard lighting displays, festive atmosphere, fun shopping spree and delicious food, Rome also offers tourists a spiritual ambience rarely found in Western Europe. Romans consider Christmas to be a very religious and important tradition, and on 24th December you will be able to view the special Midnight Mass, which is given by the Pope in St. Peter’s Square.

Y – Young People – Rome is the perfect spot for young people to visit. Aside from great nightlife and beautiful people, the city has a sexy atmosphere that attracts youngsters from all over the globe. Another factor that makes Rome suitable for younger people is the wide variety of cheap hotels everywhere.

Z – Zoo -as much as Rome is considered to be a cultural city full of museums and landmarks, it also has a lot of nature and outdoor activities. Whenever you travel with children you need to make sure they will also have an enjoyable time. Take a day off from running around the historical places and visit one of the zoos and nature parks around Rome; this is a great option for sharing a relaxed day in the wild.

Now that you have all the information you need about Rome, it is time to start planning your visit! Before heading off to your dreamy destination just keep few things in mind: the city is full of tourists ALL YEAR LONG, you will probably get fat from all the delicious food there, and your wallet will become a bit thinner thanks to all the shopping you will do there!
