How the Hotel Stars Ratings works [Infographic]

One of the most relevant pieces of information about an hotel is, for sure, the star class. While searching for their hotel people often apply a filter in the search to receive only hotels with 3 stars or more. Some people, to find a cheap hotel, search for 0 star hotels and some people search only for 4 and 5 star hotels.

But what exactly does 2 stars – or 3 or 4 for that matter – mean? That’s a good question and also quite tricky! The hotel stars rating is something that is always in evolution and changes from country to country, but in recent years the “Hotelstars Union” managed to harmonise the hotel classification for establishments throughout Europe and the surrounding area. Several countries subscribed the Hotelstars Union criteria and in 2012 this criteria will be applied basically all over Europe.

Using their criteria we created an infographic to show you all the services and facilities that are mandatory for the hotels to offer according to their stars rating. A dual purpose tool, you can use this to help you select your hotel and also to impress your friends. Clever, huh?

    Thank you for this information. I recently stayed in a place in Rome that billed itself as a two-star hotel. There were no signs on any door or anywhere with the name of the establishment visible. The accommodations consisted of seven rooms on a corridor in an apartment building. Again, all unmarked. The reception room was staffed only from 1-8pm, and there was no dining area at all, not even the smallest one. A limited, continental-type breakfast was delivered each day to the rooms of those who had requested it. I wondered especially about the fact that the ‘hotel’ was completely unmarked, undesignated.I couldn’t help but think that the lack of signs was NOT a good sign vis a vis the legitimacy of the hotel itself.
    Could you please shed some light on this situation?

    Hi Vivianite,
    In some cities, such as Rome, New York and others, besides the ‘classic’ hotels and apartments, you can also find a hybrid accommodation – an ‘aparthotel’ or similar, which is a mix between an hotel and an apartment. According to what we understand from your story, it sounds like you stayed in this type of accommodation.

    The star-rating of this kind of accommodation could be slightly different for the hotel star-rating we report in this blog-post, as there is a greater degree of independence involved.   4. Hi. I am very interested in how (originally) these ratings are derived versus how they are updated, kept current and changed. At this point I am speaking about Cuba. I have visited many times. I am very concerned how these ratings are NEVER kept current. It is amazing how from one year to the next, how a Hotel, for the most part, can go down hill, generally from disrepair, poor management and the like. There has to be some way the general population, can have first hand input, to sidetrack a multi billion tourist trap, placed by huge Tourism Operators with nothing in mind but their own dollar value in mind, not a care at all about the sap, that paid for a 4 star and got a 2 for example.
    I visited Santiago de Cuba back to back, April 11-12 2 weeks each. The Hotel had gone from very close to 4 stars to an, at best 2 rating. All from a Management change. Price goes up, rating goes down. Very poor. I would like to know, in detail, how ones input, can be of real assistance. Cheers!. Dan.
